Day 53: Quorn to The Dutchmens Hut

Daily distance: 10.3km
Total distance: 936.6km

After breaky, with very heavy packs, we walked out of Quorn in the perfect weather, chilly and clear. Don't know what we have done to deserve this weather, but we'll take it and ride the "good weather wave" as long as it lasts.

We spent 4km on the main road, in peak hour traffic (2 vehicles going south & 2 vehicles going north) before the markers took us off the road in a westerly direction. The South Flinders Rangers and The Dutchmens Conservation Park (not very PC of them) off to the west is what we were heading for as we followed first a fence then a track. The weather was so great I even got to take off my fleece and long john top and just walk in my shirt..... haven't done that for over a month now!

Walking through fields we disturbed a few Kangaroos and a couple of Euro's (Wallaroo) who were not expecting to see humans this morning. The Dutchmens Stern (peak named such for the resemblance to a ship) came into view in front of us, as we entered the conservation park. We followed the track with great views of Quorn behind us, before the mountain track opened up into a wide valley with the Dutchmans Homestead and Shearers quarters on display in the sunlight. We made our way through all the buildings until we found the hut reserved for the Heysen Walkers and have made ourselves at home. Once again to have place like this anywhere in Africa would simply not work if not guarded 24/7, however we are really pleased it is here and as luxurious as it is. I mean to have a hut with electricity........ I even had a snooze in the sun....
