Day 32: Hupputz Hut to Burra

Daily distance: 44.6km
Total distance: 531.21km

Man it was cold when we woke up! Inside the hut we still got dew on our sleeping bags.... nasty!

Whay a beautiful morning... the mist was down and cold but it was a beauty.  We left after cleaning up and the trail took us straight up the hill we hab been looking at for the past 2 days. 'Heysen humour' its called..... we ascended into the mist with roo's all around us. Unfortunately as we got higher the mist became very thick so we could not see a thing. Dripping noses from the cold we descended the eastern side of the ridge and headed due east in a straight line course.

The trail took us down a fence line through a huge valley and up a small ridge on the far saide. Down that ridge over a style, where the phantom BMW GS was once again parked, across a road, over another style and follow a fence again. Part way across this paddock 2 vehicles came past and hooted.... the 'weekend wanderers' heading to do another section of trail. It was way to cold to stop for breaky so we pushed on over the third ridge line before finding some bush cover to have a bite to eat. The rationing of the mocha coffee was crucial but we figured we had a spare so halved what we had.

We entered an amazing hiding valley that wound itself up alone beautiful grass slopes. Jeff kept on glancing at me sideways.... now I knew I stank from 5 days in the same clothes without a shower but I was downwind....... and I was picking up smells of cabbage. Eventually I said it smells like cabbage to which he agreed it was not me. Mmmmm

As we rounded the last bend in the road we saw our weekenders sitting on a slope having a bite to eat. As we got closer they offered us a couple of muffins and some jelly beans. It was fantastic zitting and having a chat and some banter with them. I asked them if they would message Dee just to let her know we were ok and we leyt them heading the way we had come.

Over the mountain and down into a very rocky creek bead and out onto the open plains. The leader of there group said we could make it to Burra if we wanted so we decided to go for it. Mmmm not the wisest decision we have made to date! When we passed the weekenders vehicle we put a note on their widscreen asking them to message Dee and ask her to change our booking to tonight instead of tomorrow and that we were pushing through to Burra.

And so it began.... the slog...... luckily the weather was amazing with crystal clear skies and the terrain was flat. We passed through the Burra Creek camp site which was full of campers and then onto the World's End camp site. We stopped there for a lunch bite having covered 25km so far. A couple of walkers came past... not very friendly.... and we continued on, and on, and on, and on, and o........... The sun went down and we still had 15km left into town. The moon was exceptionally bright and with a clear sky we could see brilliantly.  On and on we trugged following a fenceline next to the main road for what seemed an eternity. Through the gate and the trail turned north away from the main road. Checking the map we decided to stick to the main road even though it would be a bit longer and continued on. Walking down the middle of the road into Burra in the freezing cold under a crystal clear sky was absolutely amazing even though we were both buggered. A  op stopped us in utter amazment and gave us directions to the Motor Inn and to a hotel. We decided the hotel first to try get hold of Dee and find out if we had a place to stay.... boy was it nice to get somewhere warm with food and beer. It was only then that I showed Jeff what we had walked, 44.6km. Hectic!  To cut a boring story short we got a lift to the inn and had a great sleep. Thank you to Billie for the lift and a huge thankyou to Dee for sorting the booking for us.
